The Three Parts of Dental Implants and How They Work
Dental implants have three components: the implant post, the abutment, and the dental prosthetic.
- The Implant Post – The implant post is titanium, which is biocompatible and very durable. The post acts as a screw, so the abutment and dental prosthetic remain securely attached to the implant.
- The Abutment – The abutment is a small piece that connects the dental prosthetic to the implant post.
- The Dental Prosthetic – The dental prosthetic is the visible portion of the dental implant, which can be a dental crown, dental bridge, or denture.
The Dental Implant Process
Once Dr. Philips places the implant post into the jaw, the jaw and gum tissue needs to heal. Healing can take several months, and Dr. Philips will supply you with a partial denture or temporary restoration until she can place the final prosthetic.
Once your mouth has fully recovered, Dr. Philips attaches the abutment and prosthetic tooth or teeth, ensuring that all components look, feel, and function as they should.
